Board Games

As one of the more complex forms of tabletop type games, the board games sub category is nonetheless a very large one that has historically found a lot of favor between many different cultures and groups of people down through history. Even before it was possible to mass produce the pieces and game boards that would be needed for play, there were board games being played as long ago as the Egyptian dynasties. This has given rise to a plethora of different games that are still popular today, everything from chess to backgammon to Go and beyond. These games have a very long history, but newer titles such as Risk, Candyland and Monopoly may be newer, but have still managed to obtain the status of ‘gaming classics’ in the homes of the Western world. Such diversity has kept the board game industry thriving during some very harsh conditions and it continues to innovate today.

Generally speaking, board games will combine elements of strategy and luck, using the skills of the player partially and then throwing in more random elements to help keep play quite varied. This particular approach has helped them to remain viable and exciting for many generations down through history. Companies such as Parker Brothers and Milton Bradley have become iconic household names thanks to their ability to create titles like Life, Scrabble, Stratego, Sorry!, Diplomacy and a big number of other similar games that have become very popular with gamers of all stripes. The social nature of this type of game makes them very popular, along with the fact that they are easy for children to learn in many cases, with the supervision of adults.

By being careful with their resources, it is easy for players to be able to get ahead in a board game situation and much of these games can be about the proper management of resources – another aspect that makes them a strong choice for educators. Still other games are more about strategy in an indirect way such as the cunning needed to win Trivial Pursuit or a game such as Life where big decisions must be made. Although these games have been ported over to electronic platform, once that is done they are not categorized as board games despite their origins because they have become a video game and thus are the member of a different category entirely.

Board games have certainly managed to capture the hearts and minds of a wide number of people all across the world despite cultural, age and gender differences. Because of this, they have given the world a whole new form of entertainment that should be enjoyed for years to come even in this age of advance hi tech gaming. People still enjoy the hands on approach and social atmosphere of family and party board games.
