The idea behind sports is to have a physical competition that offers the elements of a game instead of a pure contest situation. This is why races are not always considered sports since the rules are more straight forward, but a game that has rules such as soccer, basketball or cricket is considered a sport. The physical activity and generally teamwork are emphasized in a sports game and usually, activities such as a beauty pageant or body building competition are not considered sports even though they both require a level of skill and are physical in nature. The precise definition of a sport will vary according to which expert one is relying on for information, but in most situations a sport has an area that it is played within, equipment which will be used, teams of players competing and a set of rules by which all players must abide that are governed by authorities such as umpires or referees.
There are sports in nearly every part of the world, many times these sports will be transported from one country to the next until they become a globally popular sport in the way that football is. Most all sports require an element of willingness from the players to engage in fair play – that is, to uphold the rules of the competition that are designed to define what it takes to win or lose the game. Point values are generally used to determine scores within the game. Sports also are played at different levels which require different levels of skill, rule complexity and physical prowess to participate in. There are child sports which are generally very unorganized neighborhood games, but there are also children’s leagues for sports like T ball and soccer. The next level are usually varsity sports played in the junior or high school level, followed by college sports. Then there are minor and major leagues. At each of these levels, most sports draw crowds who come to observe the players and these people are referred to as spectators. The spectators who are rooting for a specific team or individual player are known as fans. Sports today are so popular that there are leagues and pro sports in just about every category around the world, even entire television channels dedicated to sports news which offer scores in various leagues and live broadcasts of games.
Today, sports are not only games which a wide variety of people from all backgrounds enjoy, they are also one of the larger industries in the world, regularly bringing in billions of dollars all over the globe. Sports have the capacity to affect everything from politics to the economy in very powerful ways. What started millennia ago as ways to train and simulate different aspects of life in a competitive and yet diplomatic way has now become a thriving industry and major part of the lives of huge numbers of people across the planet.
