Recent times have shown that games where players are investigating and solving crimes, such as the CSI series based on the popular hit TV show, have grown in the number of players they attract. What few may realize is that games are now being used as way to not only catch crooks, but also to help determine whether or not they are innocent. According to Brandon Nesbit, a security expert in the field of video games and other electronics, it turns out that games will be a valuable part of crime detection and criminal apprehension in the future. One of the core concepts is that an online game such as World of Warcraft could be used as a way to figure out what a suspect was doing at the time a crime took place. Not only would the server logs for the games be accessible to law enforcement officials, but they would be able to determine exactly what the person had been doing at that precise time. This is good, says Nesbit, not only for watching out for cyber oriented crimes, but also as a means of showing where a suspect was at a given point in time.
Nesbit went on to say that a great deal of data is stored on net connected video game consoles and could be a real boon for forensic experts who are looking to piece together the life of a given suspect in order to prove their guilt or innocence. This, say many experts, could be the next wave of investigations and really help figure out what, when and where a criminal is doing what they do.
